I cracked open his first novel, The Devil You Know, again like coming back to a bell-jar of butterflies. Full of wonder and excitement, and an interesting Brechtian disassociation with the characters contained under the glass column.
Demons my friend; demons. Accidentally stuck in a friend. Cantrips and echos of the psyche, the life of an exorcist. Named Fix. Brill irony that. Someone is taking the piss at the expense of the broken sensitive and exorcist. (I couldn't help it; I love that Brit phrase).
The story follows our ironic protagonist through his first case after his "accident" and his breakdown of everything Fix thought he knew into the depths of a spiritual and emotional crisis all whilst trying to get to the bottom of the mystery. The end is an interesting conclusion - not too sweet or happy, but very honest and more how real life ends.
Anything where you make friends with a succubus who tried to kill you a few times is definitely a good way to end up.
Think Agatha Christie mixed with Simon R Green and you'll get a sense of the voice of the piece. He has jumped his output up to 5 books now in this series, most recently The Naming of Beasts which I am excited to get started on.
